Naxos, located in the modern town of Giardini Naxos just south of Taormina, was the first Greek colony established on the island of Sicily, founded in 734 BC by settlers from Chalcis. Today, the archaeological site preserves the foundations of ancient temples, city walls, and residential quarters, offering a glimpse into early Greek urban planning. The on-site archaeological museum displays artifacts unearthed during excavations, including pottery, coins, and tools that illustrate daily life in the colony. The site is set on a promontory with sweeping views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, making it a picturesque spot for history enthusiasts. Unlike more crowded sites, Naxos offers a quieter, contemplative experience where you can wander among the ruins and imagine the bustling port city that once thrived here. The adjacent beach is popular for swimming after exploring the ruins.
