Torre del Mangia is the slender bell tower of the Palazzo Pubblico, rising dramatically above Piazza del Campo. Built between 1338 and 1348, its name comes from its first bell-ringer, Giovanni di Duccio, nicknamed 'Mangia' (eater) for his spendthrift habits. Climbing the 400-plus steps is a physical challenge, but the reward is one of Italy's most stunning urban vistas. From the top, you can see the entire shell-shaped piazza, the Duomo, and the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside stretching to the horizon. The tower's design, with its white stone and brick, is a masterpiece of Gothic engineering. It's a must-do for anyone wanting to capture Siena's unique layout and medieval skyline.
Don't miss
- Panoramic views of Piazza del Campo and Siena's historic center
- Seeing the Duomo and surrounding countryside from above
- The intricate brickwork and architectural details of the tower
