The Palio di Siena is one of Italy's most spectacular and traditional events, a bareback horse race that takes place on July 2 (Palio di Provenzano) and August 16 (Palio dell'Assunta) in Piazza del Campo. Ten of Siena's 17 contrade (neighborhoods) compete, each with its own colors, emblem, and centuries-old rivalries. The race itself lasts only about 90 seconds, as horses gallop three laps around the shell-shaped piazza, which is covered with a thick layer of dirt. But the event is preceded by a magnificent medieval pageant, the Corteo Storico, featuring flag-wavers, drummers, and knights in costume. The atmosphere is electric, with locals passionately cheering for their contrada. Winning brings immense pride, while losing can lead to bitter disappointment. The Palio is not a tourist show but a deeply felt tradition that defines Sienese identity.
