Montemerano is a beautifully preserved medieval village in the Maremma region of Tuscany, about 10 km from Saturnia. Its main attraction is the Church of San Giorgio (Chiesa di San Giorgio), a Romanesque-Gothic church that houses a remarkable Renaissance polyptych by the Sienese artist Sassetta (actually attributed to the Master of the Osservanza), as well as frescoes by local painters. The village itself is a maze of narrow alleys, stone arches, and small piazzas, with a 13th-century castle and panoramic views over the countryside. Montemerano is less crowded than other Tuscan hill towns, offering an authentic glimpse into medieval life.
