Piazza del Duomo is the historic heart of San Gimignano, a sloping square flanked by some of the town's most iconic towers, including the Torre Grossa and the Torre del Podestà. The square takes its name from the Collegiata (the town's main church), which dominates one side. This is where medieval citizens gathered for markets, festivals, and public announcements. Today, it's a lively space filled with cafés and visitors, offering a perfect vantage point to admire the architectural harmony of the towers and the Palazzo Comunale (town hall). The square's uneven shape and the way the towers rise directly from its edges create a dramatic, stage-like setting.

Don't miss

  • Admire the Torre Grossa (the tallest tower) and the Torre del Podestà.
  • Visit the Palazzo Comunale, which houses the Museo Civico and frescoes.
  • Photograph the square from the steps of the Collegiata for a classic view.
  • Sit at a café and watch the world go by.
