Piazza della Cisterna is the heart of San Gimignano, a charming triangular piazza named after the well (cisterna) that stands at its center. The square is paved with brick and slopes gently, creating a natural amphitheater effect. Lined with medieval tower-houses, palaces, and cafes, it offers a quintessential Tuscan experience. Visitors can sit at an outdoor table, admire the surrounding architecture, and watch the world go by. The well, built in the 13th century, once served as the town's main water source. The square connects to Piazza del Duomo via a short passage, making it a perfect starting point for exploring the historic center. Its irregular shape and harmonious ensemble of buildings make it one of Italy's most photogenic squares.
