The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, often called the Duomo of San Gimignano, is a Romanesque church that dates back to the 11th century. Its plain exterior belies an interior richly decorated with frescoes by artists such as Taddeo di Bartolo, Bartolo di Fredi, and Benozzo Gozzoli. The nave walls are covered with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, arranged in registers that tell biblical stories in vivid detail. The chapel of Santa Fina, designed by Giuliano da Maiano and frescoed by Domenico Ghirlandaio, is a highlight, depicting the life of the local saint. The church's ceiling is painted a deep blue with gold stars, creating a celestial atmosphere. Despite its modest size, the Collegiata is considered one of the finest frescoed churches in Tuscany.
