Lago di Loppio

Lago di Loppio is a unique seasonal lake located on the Monte Baldo massif, about 10 km from Riva del Garda. Unlike typical lakes, it appears only after heavy rains or snowmelt, usually in spring and autumn, and dries up in summer, leaving a lush green basin. This ephemeral nature creates a dynamic ecosystem that attracts a wide variety of bird species, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. The area is a protected nature reserve (Riserva Naturale Lago di Loppio) with well-marked hiking and cycling trails that circle the basin and climb the surrounding hills. Visitors can spot herons, ducks, and migratory birds, as well as wildflowers and butterflies. The reserve also features a visitor center with educational displays about the local flora and fauna. The lack of permanent water means no swimming, but the peaceful landscape and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains make it a rewarding destination for nature enthusiasts. The nearby village of Loppio offers a few refreshment options.
