Stabiae, near modern Castellammare di Stabia, offers a less crowded alternative to Pompeii. The archaeological site showcases luxurious Roman villas, such as Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna, buried under ash in 79 AD. Visitors walk through sprawling rooms with intact frescoes depicting mythological scenes, gardens, and daily life. The site's elevated position provides views of the Bay of Naples. Unlike Pompeii, Stabiae's villas were elite seaside retreats, giving insight into the leisure of ancient Rome. Ongoing excavations reveal new treasures.

Don't miss

  • Villa San Marco's large peristyle and frescoed rooms
  • Villa Arianna's stunning 'Ariadne' fresco
  • Panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples
