Aternum is the archaeological site of the ancient Roman city that once stood where modern Pescara now lies. Located near the port area, the site reveals remnants of the Roman settlement that flourished from the 2nd century BC onward. Visitors can see the foundations of a Roman bridge that crossed the Pescara River, parts of the city walls, thermal baths, and the forum. The ruins are partially integrated into the urban landscape, with some sections visible in public parks and along the riverbank. Interpretive panels provide context in Italian and English. The site is not a single enclosed area but a series of scattered remains, making it a self-guided walking tour through the city. The most impressive section is the bridge pier near the mouth of the river. Aternum offers a tangible connection to Pescara's ancient past, contrasting with the modern city around it. The site is free to explore at any time.
