Fontana Maggiore stands at the heart of Perugia's historic center, in Piazza IV Novembre. This medieval fountain, completed in 1278, is a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture. Its two polygonal basins are decorated with over 50 marble reliefs and statues depicting biblical scenes, zodiac signs, and allegories of the months and liberal arts. The upper basin is crowned by a bronze griffin and lion, symbols of Perugia and the Guelph party. Visitors can admire the intricate craftsmanship up close, noting the expressive faces and detailed narratives. The fountain is not only a work of art but also a symbol of civic pride, as it was part of a public water system.
