Ponte Coperto, or the Covered Bridge, is the most recognizable landmark of Pavia, spanning the Ticino River with five stone arches and a covered walkway. The current bridge, rebuilt after World War II, faithfully replicates the original 14th-century structure that was damaged by Allied bombing. Walking across, you pass under a roof supported by columns, with small chapels at each end. The bridge offers lovely views of the river, the medieval towers of Pavia, and the surrounding hills. It connects the historic center with the Borgo Ticino neighborhood, a lively area with trattorias and gelaterias. The bridge is pedestrian-only, making it a pleasant stroll day or night, especially when illuminated. Its distinctive silhouette has made it a beloved subject for photographers and painters.
