The Citadel of Parma, also known as Cittadella, is a massive pentagonal fortress built in the 16th century by the Farnese family. Designed by military architect Francesco Paciotto, it was intended to defend the city and assert ducal power. Today, the Citadel serves as a public park and cultural venue. The fortress is surrounded by a moat (now dry) and features thick stone walls, bastions, and a central parade ground. Visitors can walk along the ramparts, enjoy the grassy areas, and explore the interior where events, concerts, and markets are held. The Citadel also houses a sports center with tennis courts and a swimming pool. Its distinctive star-shaped layout is best appreciated from above, but walking the perimeter gives a sense of its scale. It's a popular spot for jogging, cycling, and family outings, blending history with recreation.
