The Zisa is a striking Norman palace built in the 12th century as a summer residence for the Norman kings of Sicily. Located just outside Palermo's historic center, it exemplifies the fusion of Norman, Arab, and Byzantine styles. The name 'Zisa' derives from the Arabic 'al-Aziz', meaning 'splendid'. Inside, you'll find the Museum of Islamic Art, which showcases ceramics, woodwork, and other artifacts from the Islamic period in Sicily. The palace's central hall features a remarkable fountain and intricate muqarnas (stalactite) ceiling. The surrounding gardens, though partially restored, offer a peaceful retreat with citrus trees and geometric flowerbeds. Visitors can climb to the upper floors for views over the city and the garden.
