The Church of San Cataldo is a small but remarkable example of Norman architecture in Palermo. Built in the 12th century, its most striking feature is the trio of bright red domes that rise above the roofline, a clear influence of Islamic architecture. The church's exterior is relatively plain, with blind arches and geometric patterns, while the interior is stark and unadorned, creating a serene atmosphere. The floor retains original mosaic work, and the walls bear traces of frescoes. The church is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes several Arab-Norman monuments in Palermo. Despite its modest size, San Cataldo offers a powerful glimpse into the multicultural society of medieval Sicily, where Norman, Arab, and Byzantine elements blended seamlessly. It is located on Piazza Bellini, adjacent to the Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (Martorana).
