The Equestrian statue of Gattamelata stands proudly in Piazza del Santo, just in front of the Basilica of Saint Anthony. Created by Donatello between 1446 and 1453, it is one of the first large-scale bronze equestrian statues cast since antiquity and a landmark of Renaissance sculpture. The statue depicts Erasmo da Narni, a Venetian condottiero nicknamed 'Gattamelata' (meaning 'honeyed cat'), mounted on a powerful horse in a dynamic pose. The detailed rendering of the horse's musculature and the commander's stern expression convey authority and realism. Visitors can walk around the statue to appreciate its craftsmanship from all angles. The piazza itself is a lively space, often filled with pilgrims and tourists. The statue is free to view and is a must-see for art lovers and history buffs.
