Pozzo di San Patrizio, or St. Patrick's Well, is an engineering marvel built between 1527 and 1537 by architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. Commissioned by Pope Clement VII to ensure a water supply during a siege, the well features two independent helical staircases that allow people and donkeys to descend and ascend without crossing paths. Descending the 248 steps, visitors can admire the well's ingenious design, with 72 windows illuminating the shaft. At the bottom, a bridge crosses the water, and the cool, damp air provides a respite from the summer heat. The well is named after St. Patrick's Purgatory in Ireland due to its depth and resemblance to a sacred site.
