The Bravio delle Botti is one of Montepulciano's most thrilling and authentic traditions, dating back centuries. Every August, eight teams representing the city's historic contrade (districts) compete by rolling heavy oak wine barrels, each weighing about 80 kilograms, through the narrow, winding streets from the bottom of the town to the main square, Piazza Grande. The race is not just a test of strength but also of skill and teamwork, as the barrels must be maneuvered around sharp corners and up steep inclines. The event is preceded by a colorful procession in Renaissance costumes, with flag-wavers and musicians, creating a festive atmosphere. What makes this experience distinctive is its raw, community-driven energy, locals cheer passionately for their contrada, and the race feels like a living piece of history. Visitors can watch from along the route or gather in the piazza for the dramatic finish. The Bravio is more than a race; it's a celebration of Montepulciano's winemaking heritage and civic pride.
