Madonnina is the affectionate name for the golden statue of the Virgin Mary that crowns the main spire of Milan's Duomo. Standing over 4 meters tall and covered in gold leaf, she has been a beloved symbol of the city since 1774. Visitors can see her from many points in Milan, but the best view is from the Duomo's rooftop terraces, which you can reach by stairs or elevator. The climb offers an up-close look at the intricate spires and gargoyles, and a breathtaking panorama of Milan and the Alps on clear days. The Madonnina herself gleams in the sunlight, and at night she is illuminated, serving as a guiding light for Milanese. Her presence is both a religious icon and a civic emblem, representing the city's pride and resilience.

A bit of history
The statue was designed by Giuseppe Perego and cast in copper, then gilded with gold leaf. It was placed on the tallest spire of the Duomo in 1774. During World War II, the Madonnina was covered to protect it from bombing, and it has been restored several times since.
