Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost and most populous of the Cinque Terre villages, known for its expansive sandy beach, the only one of its kind in the area. The village is divided into two parts: the newer Fegina beach area, with its modern hotels and restaurants, and the historic old town, a maze of narrow streets and medieval buildings. The old town is dominated by the Gothic Church of San Giovanni Battista, with its striking black-and-white marble facade. A notable landmark is the statue of the Giant (Il Gigante), a stone figure carved into a cliff overlooking the beach. Monterosso offers a range of amenities, including shops, bars, and a lively promenade. The surrounding hills are terraced with vineyards and olive groves, and hiking trails connect to neighboring villages. Its beach and larger size make it a convenient base for exploring the Cinque Terre.
