The Monument of the Four Moors, or Monumento dei Quattro Mori, is one of Livorno's most iconic landmarks, located in Piazza della Repubblica near the port. Created in the 17th century, it features a statue of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici above four bronze figures of chained Moorish slaves, each representing a different stage of life and emotion. The monument commemorates the Medici's victory over Barbary pirates and Livorno's role as a powerful maritime republic. Visitors can admire the intricate details of the chains and the expressive faces of the Moors, which convey a mix of defiance and resignation. The surrounding square is a bustling hub with cafes and views of the canal, making it a perfect spot for a short visit.
