Gallipoli Cathedral, officially the Basilica Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, is the main church of the city, located in the heart of the old town. Built in the 17th century, it exemplifies the exuberant Baroque style of the Salento region. The facade is ornate, with statues and intricate carvings, but the interior truly dazzles: a Latin cross plan with a nave and side chapels, all covered in gilded stucco, frescoes, and polychrome marble. The high altar features a painting of Saint Agatha by Luca Giordano. The cathedral's dome, visible from afar, is a landmark of the Gallipoli skyline. Visitors often pause to admire the detailed woodwork of the choir stalls and the serene atmosphere. It remains an active place of worship, so respectful attire is required.
