The Basilica of San Lorenzo is one of Florence's oldest churches, rebuilt in the 15th century under the patronage of the Medici family. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, it exemplifies early Renaissance architecture with its harmonious proportions, gray stone, and white plaster interior. The church is the burial place of many Medici members, including Cosimo de' Medici, and contains the Medici Chapels, a complex of two chapels: the New Sacristy with sculptures by Michelangelo and the Chapel of the Princes, a lavish octagonal dome covered in marble and semi-precious stones. Visitors can also see the Old Sacristy by Brunelleschi, adorned with Donatello's reliefs. The adjacent Laurentian Library, also designed by Michelangelo, holds the Medici's manuscript collection. A visit here offers a deep dive into Medici power, Renaissance art, and architectural innovation.

Don't miss

  • Medici Chapels: the New Sacristy (Michelangelo's sculptures of Dawn, Dusk, Day, and Night) and the Chapel of the Princes (richly decorated with marble and gemstones)
  • Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy: a masterpiece of perspective and geometry with Donatello's terracotta roundels
  • The Laurentian Library: Michelangelo's architectural design with its famous staircase and reading room
  • The bronze pulpit by Donatello, depicting scenes from Christ's life
