Piazza della Signoria has been the political heart of Florence since the 14th century. This L-shaped square is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio, the medieval town hall with its towering campanile. The square functions as an open-air sculpture gallery, featuring a copy of Michelangelo's David (the original is in the Accademia), the Fountain of Neptune, and the Loggia dei Lanzi with statues like Cellini's Perseus. Visitors can sit at outdoor cafes, watch street performers, and soak in the atmosphere of Renaissance history. The square is also the site of the famous Bonfire of the Vanities in 1497. It's a bustling hub, perfect for people-watching and photography, especially at sunset when the palazzo glows golden.
