The Grottoes of Catullus (Grotte di Catullo) is the name given to the ruins of a massive Roman villa located on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, overlooking Lake Garda. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the poet Catullus; the term 'grottoes' refers to the villa's vaulted ruins that were later mistaken for caves. This is one of the largest and most impressive Roman villas in northern Italy, dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The site covers a vast area, with remains of residential quarters, baths, courtyards, and terraces. Visitors can walk through the ruins, imagining the grandeur of the original structure, and enjoy panoramic views of the lake from the villa's elevated position. An on-site museum displays artifacts found during excavations, including pottery, coins, and fresco fragments. What makes it distinctive is its sheer scale and dramatic setting on the lake's edge. The site is particularly evocative at sunset when the ruins are bathed in golden light.
