Cortona Cathedral, also known as the Duomo di Cortona, is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (the Assumption of Mary). Built between the 16th and 17th centuries on the site of a Romanesque church, the cathedral features a simple Renaissance facade and a spacious interior with a single nave. The cathedral houses several important artworks, including a painting by Luca Signorelli (the 'Deposition from the Cross') and a wooden crucifix from the 14th century. The adjacent Diocesan Museum displays additional treasures, but the cathedral itself is a peaceful place for reflection and appreciation of sacred art.
Don't miss
- Luca Signorelli's 'Deposition from the Cross' (1502), a masterpiece of Renaissance painting.
- The 14th-century wooden crucifix, a fine example of Gothic sculpture.
- The high altar with a marble tabernacle by Giovanni Battista Foggini.
- The organ, dating from the 17th century, still in use.
- The peaceful cloister, accessible from the cathedral, with frescoes.
