The Cristallo mountain group rises sharply east of Cortina d'Ampezzo, its jagged limestone spires and glaciers forming a dramatic backdrop to the town. This massif is a magnet for climbers and skiers, with routes ranging from moderate via ferrata to challenging multi-pitch ascents. The most famous peak, Monte Cristallo, reaches 3,221 meters and offers a classic Dolomites summit experience. In winter, the Cristallo ski area provides long, groomed runs with fewer crowds than other Cortina slopes. Summer visitors can hike the Alta Via 1 trail that skirts the range, or take the chairlift from the Passo Tre Croci area to access high-altitude paths. What makes Cristallo distinctive is its wild, less-developed character compared to other Dolomite groups, here, the sense of remote alpine solitude is palpable, even close to town.

Don't miss

  • Climb the via ferrata 'Ivano Dibona' on Cristallo's south face
  • Ski the Cristallo slopes in winter for uncrowded runs
  • Hike the Alta Via 1 trail section along the massif's base
  • Visit the Rifugio Son Forca for panoramic views and refreshments
