Tuvixeddu necropolis is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient burial sites in the Mediterranean, located on a hill in northwestern Cagliari. Dating from the 6th century BC to the Roman era, it contains over a thousand rock-cut tombs (hypogea) carved into the soft limestone. The site is an open-air archaeological park where visitors can walk among the tombs, many of which retain their original facades, burial chambers, and even traces of paint. The most impressive area is the Punic sector, with deep shaft tombs and intricate carvings. Roman tombs feature niches for urns and inscriptions. The hill itself offers views over the city and the port. Tuvixeddu is less visited than Cagliari's other attractions, providing a contemplative experience. Guided tours are available and recommended to understand the site's significance. The necropolis is also a green space, with Mediterranean scrub and wildflowers growing among the tombs.
