The Montiggler Seen (Monticolo Lakes) are two small, crystal-clear lakes nestled in the forested hills southwest of Bolzano. The larger lake, Lago Grande, and the smaller Lago Piccolo are surrounded by walking trails and offer a refreshing escape into nature. In summer, the lakes are a favorite spot for locals to swim, with designated bathing areas and grassy shores perfect for sunbathing. The surrounding woods are crisscrossed with hiking paths suitable for all levels, leading to panoramic viewpoints over the Adige Valley. Picnic tables and a couple of lakeside restaurants make it easy to spend a full day. The water is clean and relatively warm by late summer. Despite its popularity, the area retains a peaceful, alpine feel, especially on weekdays.

Don't miss

  • Swim in the clear waters of Lago Grande or Lago Piccolo
  • Hike the circular trail around both lakes (about 1 hour)
  • Enjoy a picnic with views of the surrounding forest
  • Visit the nearby farmstead for local produce
  • Take a break at the lakeside kiosk or restaurant
