The Anatomical Theatre of the Archiginnasio is a stunningly preserved 17th-century lecture hall located within the Archiginnasio Palace, once the main building of the University of Bologna. The theatre is crafted entirely from spruce wood, featuring intricate carvings and a raised central table where human dissections were performed. The room is surrounded by statues of famous physicians and the 'spellati' (skinned figures) that illustrate muscle anatomy. The ceiling is adorned with the university's coat of arms and zodiac symbols. Visiting this space offers a vivid glimpse into the history of medical education, as the theatre's intimate, tiered seating allowed students to observe procedures up close. The acoustics and wooden construction create a solemn, almost theatrical atmosphere, emphasizing the dramatic nature of early anatomy lessons.

Don't miss

  • The raised white marble dissection table at the center of the room.
  • The two 'spellati' statues, depicting flayed human figures showing muscles.
  • The wooden canopy above the professor's chair, supported by carved figures.
  • The intricate frieze of university coats of arms and zodiac symbols on the ceiling.
  • The statues of ancient physicians like Hippocrates and Galen lining the walls.
