The Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Bari is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Christendom, drawing visitors from both Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Built between 1087 and 1197, the church was constructed to house the relics of Saint Nicholas, which were brought from Myra (modern-day Turkey) by Italian sailors. The exterior is a fine example of Apulian Romanesque style, with a simple yet imposing facade flanked by two towers. Inside, the atmosphere is solemn and reverent, with a magnificent crypt where the saint's bones lie beneath a silver altar. The basilica's interior features a wooden ceiling, a bishop's throne, and a 13th-century ciborium. Visitors often witness pilgrims touching the tomb and leaving offerings. The adjacent museum displays artifacts and treasures related to Saint Nicholas.
