Patriarchate of Aquileia

The Patriarchate of Aquileia is a religious site centered around the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, a stunning example of early Christian architecture. The basilica, built in the 4th century and later modified, features a vast interior with a raised presbytery and a remarkable mosaic floor dating from the 4th century. The mosaics cover the entire nave and depict scenes from the story of Jonah, the Good Shepherd, and various Christian symbols, all in vibrant colors. Adjacent to the basilica is the baptistery, an octagonal structure with a central font, and the remains of the 5th-century basilica. The site also includes the Patriarchal Palace and a museum housing artifacts from the patriarchate's history.
