Standing proudly at the entrance of Ancona's harbor, the Arch of Trajan is a well-preserved Roman monument dating from 115 AD. Constructed in white marble from the quarries of Turkey, it was erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate Trajan's expansion of the port. The arch features a single archway flanked by Corinthian columns, with an attic originally adorned with bronze statues of Trajan, his wife Plotina, and his sister Marciana. Today, the arch serves as a symbolic gateway to the city, offering a glimpse into ancient Roman engineering and imperial propaganda. Visitors can walk right up to the monument, admiring the intricate carvings and the Latin inscription that still reads clearly. Its seaside location makes it a popular spot for photos, especially at sunset when the marble glows warmly.
