Perched high above the Amalfi Coast, Scala offers a serene escape from the coastal crowds. This medieval hilltop village is the oldest settlement on the coast, with narrow stone streets, ancient churches, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and sea. The main square, Piazza Municipio, features the Cathedral of San Lorenzo with its beautiful majolica-tiled dome. Visitors can explore the ruins of a 12th-century castle, wander through terraced lemon groves, and enjoy the tranquility of a less-touristed spot. Scala is also a starting point for hiking trails, including the path to the nearby village of Ravello. The atmosphere is peaceful and authentic, with a few family-run restaurants serving local cuisine.

Don't miss

  • Cathedral of San Lorenzo with its majolica dome and crypt
  • Ruins of the Castello Scaletta (castle) offering sweeping views
  • Wandering the quiet, narrow streets and stairways
  • Hiking the trail to Ravello (about 30 minutes)
  • Tasting local products like chestnuts and olive oil
