San Giovanni del Toro is one of Ravello's oldest and most enchanting churches, founded in the 11th century. Dedicated to Saint John the Apostle, its name derives from the neighborhood 'del Toro' (of the bull), possibly referencing a local legend or a noble family's emblem. The church's architecture reflects a blend of Romanesque and later Baroque styles, but its true treasures lie inside. The highlight is the magnificent pulpit, supported by six spiral columns resting on lion sculptures, intricately carved with biblical scenes and symbolic figures. The apse features stunning 12th-century Byzantine-style mosaics depicting Christ Pantocrator flanked by saints, their gold tesserae shimmering in the dim light. The church also houses a 13th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child. Unlike the more famous Ravello Cathedral, San Giovanni del Toro offers a quieter, more intimate experience, allowing visitors to absorb its spiritual and artistic heritage without crowds. The adjacent bell tower and the peaceful courtyard add to its charm.
