The Temple of Heracles, also known as the Temple of Hercules, is the most ancient of the Doric temples in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. Dating back to the late 6th century BC, it originally consisted of 38 columns, though only eight remain standing today, re-erected in the 1920s. The temple sits on a rocky spur near the entrance of the archaeological park, making it one of the first major structures visitors encounter. Its massive stone blocks and sturdy columns evoke the power and simplicity of early Greek architecture. As you walk around the temple, you can imagine the bustling ancient city of Akragas, which once thrived here. The site offers a tangible connection to the past, with views stretching across the valley to the Mediterranean Sea. The lack of a roof or cella walls allows for an open, airy experience, emphasizing the scale and craftsmanship of the original construction.
