The Temple of Concordia stands as the crowning glory of the Valley of the Temples. Built around 440-430 BC, it is one of the most intact Doric temples surviving from antiquity, rivaling the Parthenon in preservation. Its name comes from a Latin inscription found nearby, but the original Greek dedication remains unknown. The temple's near-perfect condition is due to its conversion into a Christian basilica in the 6th century AD, which protected it from destruction. Visitors can walk around the entire structure, admiring the 34 columns (6 on the front and 13 on each long side) that still support the architrave and pediments. The interior cella walls are partially preserved, and the altar in front is clearly visible. The temple sits on a hilltop with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and the sea, making it a favorite spot for photographers, especially at sunset.

Don't miss

  • Admire the flawless Doric columns, each carved from a single block of stone.
  • See the Christian modifications, such as the three arches cut into the cella walls.
  • Photograph the temple from the east side at sunrise or the west side at sunset for dramatic lighting.
  • Notice the subtle curvature of the stylobate (the temple's base), an optical refinement typical of Greek architecture.
  • Walk around the entire perimeter to appreciate the temple's proportions and symmetry.
