Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, Galway

The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, commonly known as Galway Cathedral, is a striking modern cathedral that dominates the city's skyline. Built between 1958 and 1965 on the site of the old Galway jail, it is one of the last great stone cathedrals built in Europe. Its design blends Renaissance and Gothic elements, most notably a large copper-clad dome that rises 44 meters above the crossing. Inside, the cathedral is spacious and light-filled, with beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate mosaics, and a majestic marble altar. The acoustics are superb, making it a venue for concerts and recitals. The cathedral is dedicated to both Our Lady and St Nicholas, reflecting Galway's maritime heritage. Visitors can also see the original jail walls incorporated into the structure.
