Croagh Patrick is a striking 764-meter mountain near Westport, County Mayo, revered as Ireland's holiest mountain. For centuries, pilgrims have climbed its slopes, following in the footsteps of Saint Patrick, who is said to have spent 40 days fasting on the summit. The climb is both a spiritual journey and a physical challenge, offering breathtaking views of Clew Bay and the surrounding countryside. Visitors can join the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage on the last Sunday of July, or hike independently during the climbing season (April to October). The trail is rocky and steep, especially near the top, but the reward is a sense of accomplishment and a visit to the small oratory at the summit. Even non-pilgrims are drawn to the mountain for its natural beauty and panoramic vistas.
