Mungret Abbey is a serene medieval ruin located just a few kilometers southwest of Limerick city. The site features the remains of a monastic settlement founded in the 6th century, with a striking 30-meter round tower that dominates the landscape. The abbey church, with its Gothic windows and stone walls, stands roofless but evocative, surrounded by a graveyard still in use. The grounds are peaceful, with mature trees and wildflowers, offering a quiet retreat from the city. Visitors can walk among the ruins and imagine the lives of the Augustinian monks who once lived here. The round tower, one of the best-preserved in Ireland, is a highlight, you can see its conical cap and narrow windows. The site is not heavily touristed, so you may have it almost to yourself. It's a place for contemplation and photography, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.
