James's Fort is a striking 17th-century star-shaped fortification perched on the eastern side of Kinsale Harbour. Built during the reign of James I, it was designed to defend the harbour entrance alongside the larger Charles Fort on the opposite shore. Today, the fort is a peaceful ruin, its grassy ramparts offering panoramic views over the water and the town. Visitors can stroll along the walls, explore the remnants of bastions and barracks, and watch boats sail in and out of the harbour. The site is a favourite for photographers and history buffs, and its open, windswept setting makes for a refreshing walk. Unlike Charles Fort, James's Fort is less developed, giving it a wilder, more atmospheric feel.
