Killone Abbey is a serene and atmospheric ruin of an Augustinian nunnery founded in the late 12th century. Located on the eastern shore of Killone Lake, about 5 km south of Ennis, the site offers a peaceful retreat into Ireland's medieval monastic past. The abbey consists of a nave, chancel, and a distinctive east window, with parts of the cloister and domestic buildings still visible. Visitors can explore the overgrown graveyard, which contains ancient tombstones and a holy well dedicated to St. John. The setting is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon when the low sun casts long shadows across the lake. The abbey is a National Monument and is freely accessible, though it requires a short walk from the nearest parking area.
