Reask is an evocative early Christian monastic settlement dating from the 6th to 8th centuries, located on a windswept hillside overlooking Smerwick Harbour. The site features the foundations of a small rectangular oratory, several beehive huts, and a remarkable cross-inscribed pillar stone. This pillar, carved with a Greek cross and intricate patterns, is one of the finest examples of early Christian stone carving in Ireland. Wandering among the low stone walls and grassy mounds, you can trace the outline of the monks' simple dwellings and chapel. The peaceful, remote setting helps convey the ascetic life of the early monks. Unlike more famous sites like Skellig Michael, Reask is uncrowded, offering a contemplative experience. Interpretive signs provide context, but much is left to the imagination.
