Gallarus Castle stands as a striking example of a medieval tower house in the Dingle Peninsula. Built in the 15th century, this four-story structure retains much of its original character, with thick stone walls, narrow windows, and a sturdy rectangular form. Visitors can explore the interior, which includes a vaulted ground floor and remnants of fireplaces on upper levels. The castle's remote setting, surrounded by green fields and stone walls, offers a glimpse into the fortified residences of Gaelic lords. Unlike many ruins, Gallarus Castle is in excellent condition, allowing you to climb its stairs and imagine life centuries ago. Its proximity to the famous Gallarus Oratory makes it a convenient stop on a historical tour of the area.

Don't miss

  • Climb the narrow spiral staircase to the top floor for views of the surrounding countryside.
  • Examine the well-preserved vaulted ceiling on the ground floor.
  • Notice the original stone fireplace and window openings on upper levels.
  • Combine your visit with the nearby Gallarus Oratory, an early Christian church.
