The Blarney Stone is set into the battlements of Blarney Castle, a medieval stronghold built in 1446 by the MacCarthy dynasty. To kiss the stone, visitors lean backward over a sheer drop, holding onto iron rails, a tradition said to bestow the gift of gab. The stone itself is a block of bluestone, and the ritual has drawn millions, including world leaders and literary figures. While queuing, you'll climb narrow spiral stairs and pass through the castle's chambers, gaining a sense of its fortified history. The surrounding gardens, with their fern house and poison garden, add to the experience. Despite the tourist crowds, the act of kissing the stone remains a thrilling, if brief, moment that connects you to centuries of lore.
