Belvelly Castle is a striking medieval tower house that stands guard over the narrow strait between Great Island and Fota Island. Built in the 15th century, this four-story stone structure is one of the best-preserved tower houses in County Cork. Its location near the Belvelly Bridge makes it easily accessible, yet it retains a sense of isolation. Visitors can admire its sturdy battlements, narrow windows, and the remnants of a bawn wall. Though the interior is not open to the public, the exterior offers plenty to explore. The castle is surrounded by green fields and tidal waters, creating a picturesque scene. It's a favorite spot for history buffs and photographers, especially in the soft light of morning or evening. The site is free to visit and provides a tangible link to the region's medieval past, when such towers controlled access to the island.
