The Mosul Museum, established in 1952, houses a significant collection of artifacts from the Assyrian, Hellenistic, and Islamic periods, including statues, cuneiform tablets, and metalwork. During the ISIS occupation, the museum was severely damaged and many items were looted or destroyed. After extensive restoration, the museum has partially reopened, displaying surviving pieces and reconstructed galleries. Visitors can see remnants of Assyrian palace reliefs and Islamic ceramics, gaining insight into the region's rich cultural heritage.

Don't miss

  • View the surviving Assyrian palace reliefs, including the famous 'Lion Hunt' scene from the palace of Ashurbanipal.
  • See the reconstructed Islamic gallery, featuring intricate pottery and metalwork from the Abbasid period.
  • Examine the museum's collection of cuneiform tablets, some of which were recovered after being looted.
