The Battle of Najaf in 2004 was a major confrontation in Kufa and Najaf, where US troops fought Mahdi Army militiamen loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr around the revered Imam Ali Shrine. The battle caused significant damage to the old city and shrine, but the shrine itself was preserved. Visitors today see rebuilt areas and hear stories of the conflict, which highlighted the shrine's symbolic importance and the resilience of the local community.
