Etemenanki, meaning 'House of the Foundation of Heaven and Earth,' was a towering ziggurat in ancient Babylon dedicated to the chief god Marduk. This stepped pyramid, rising in seven tiers, is widely thought to have inspired the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. Visitors today can see the excavated foundation and imagine the immense structure that once dominated the Mesopotamian plain.
