Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, built in the early 17th century, is a smaller but exquisitely decorated mosque on the eastern side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square. Unlike other grand mosques, it has no minarets or courtyard, and its interior is a single, harmonious space crowned by a shallow dome. The tilework inside is among the finest in Iran, with a stunning peacock-tail motif at the center of the dome that catches the light. Visitors are captivated by the subtle color changes of the tiles throughout the day.

Don't miss

  • Look for the peacock-tail pattern in the center of the dome that appears when sunlight hits the tiles
  • Trace the intricate arabesque and floral tilework on the walls and mihrab
  • Observe how the interior light shifts from warm to cool tones as the sun moves
